Living History

What is Living History?

Living History is the story telling of Australian history by the Australian community. It is a chance to reflect on the events that shaped our nation or to recount the way Australians lived at that time. This section contains the memories of famous and ordinary Australians.

Anzac Day

ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Day is observed with a public holiday on 25 April each year throughout Australia and is commemorated in several other countries.

It is probably Australia’s most important national occasion. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces on 25 April 1915 at Gallipoli during the First World War.

After the Second World War, ANZAC Day became the day to remember all Australians killed in all military operations in which Australia has been involved.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

With the recent discovery of the wreck of HMAS Sydney after more than six decades, ANZAC Day will be particularly important to many people.

We all have memories of ANZAC Days commemorated in different places all over Australia and even in other countries – the Dawn Service, the Last Post, marches of ex-service men and women and their descendents, and the famous ‘two-up games’.

We want to hear all about your memories of ANZAC Days.

Please send us your memories and photos to share with other Seniors Portal users.
