Question:
As an English teacher by profession, I have always been a stickler for grammar. Now that I am retired I would like a part-time job, volunteer or paid, in the editing field. What would you suggest I do?
Answer:
Tehani - There are many courses available by distance education offering qualifications in editing. Thompson Direct has a well known correspondence course in editing, and some universities also offer courses ranging from Graduate Certificate level through to Masters. Being a stickler for grammar is useful for proofreading and line editing, but many authors are searching for something more for their manuscripts, and these courses will guide you in that process. In the meantime, there are many online groups dedicated to manuscript critiquing, which may be a way to hone your skills. In many capital states in Australia there are organisations providing a service to both prospective editors and authors by collating editor details in one place – these will have minimum requirements for joining, but may be of assistance to you. Try the Editing Matters website for some links to various state organisations or google search “Society of Editors” in your state. You might consider offering your services to your local newspaper for proofreading, volunteering to assist with a local school magazine, or other community projects as well.
