The Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health - known as ‘Women's Health Australia’ - is a longitudinal population-based survey, which looks at the health of over 40,000 Australian women over a 20 year period.
The project was designed to explore factors that influence health among women who are broadly representative of the entire Australian population. The study takes a wide-ranging view of all aspects of health throughout women's life-span; one of the key themes of this study is older women’s health.
The project measures:
- physical and emotional health (including well-being, major diagnoses, symptoms)
- use of health services (GP, specialist and other visits, access, satisfaction)
- health behaviours and risk factors (diet, exercise, smoking, alcohol, other drugs)
- time use (including paid and unpaid work, family roles and leisure)
- socio-demographic factors (location, education, employment, family composition)
- life stages and key events (such as childbirth, divorce, widowhood, menopause)
The research then becomes a resource for the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing providing extremely useful information on women’s health in Australia. Visit the Women’s Health Australia website to have a look at the study and all that it involves.
