Question & Answer
We are discussing Overseas Volunteering
With Linda Elliot, Monica Kincade and Meghan Bailey
Question:
I'm a fairly healthy and active 60 year old and I'm interested in travelling overseas. I'd like to do something different and useful while I'm over there. Could you advise me on what options are available?
Answer:
Monica - There are many overseas volunteering opportunities for people of all ages. One such opportunity that may be of interest to you is with Earthwatch Institute Australia. Earthwatch Institute engages people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment.
Our expeditions are ongoing research projects confronting critical, current issues, run by qualified and respected members of the scientific community. Earthwatch expeditions are not tours, not eco-tourism, not adventure travel. Earthwatch expeditions are short-term volunteer opportunities directly assisting scientists in their field research. In some cases, volunteers work in areas inaccessible to tourists; pristine regions that only researchers are allowed to enter. Most projects are 10-14 days long, but there are also one-week, three-week, and weekend opportunities available.
The researchers that Earthwatch are affiliated with come from all over the globe. They apply to Earthwatch Institute for grants that support their work by simultaneously organising volunteers to assist them in the field and funding the research. Topics span a wide range of scientific studies including ecology, zoology and archaeology. Volunteers have an excellent opportunity to learn about specific environmental issues in a very practical way. People walk away with a greater understanding of species or ecosysyems that they are particularly interested in, while meeting like minded people and making life long friends.
Volunteering on Earthwatch expeditions is an opportunity to make the world a more sustainable place for our children and grand children. Visit: www.earthwatch.org/australia/
