Useful resources for physical activity

Active Ageing South Australia

Active Ageing South Australia is highly committed to active ageing; they are focused on ensuring that there is increasing participation in recreational and physical activities of people as they age. This website has a useful list of events in South Australia, as well as information about training courses for activities such as ‘Tai Chi chair’ and ‘exercise bands’.

The Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA), Canberra and YMCA National

The YMCA Canberra website has useful information in their sport and fitness section, including information on a wide range of activities and older adult’s community programs. Contact your local YMCA to ask about the types of activities that are available in your area.

The National Ageing Research Institute (NARI)

The National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) is the only institute in Australia that focuses on ageing, and is able to deal with age-related issues. NARI's aims are to enhance quality of life, help older people live independently and ensure ageing well for all. The NARI web site has many helpful tips to help you age well.

Councils on the Ageing (COTA)

Councils on the Ageing (COTA) National Seniors are the largest senior’s organisation in Australia. It protects and promotes the well-being of all older people and is an independent organisation run by older Australians. This year COTA ACT celebrates Seniors Week with their “let the good times roll “ campaign.

The Department of Health and Ageing

The Department of Health and Ageing website contains a wide range of topics relevant to consumers, including seniors and the ageing population. The nutrition and physical activity section of this site contains handy information including a brochure on the National Physical Activity Guidelines for Adults

Health Insite

Throughout the Health Insite website you will find a wide range of up-to-date and quality information on important health topics related to older Australians including many fact sheets with information on exercise for older people.

Nutrition Australia

Nutrition Australia is a non-government, non-profit, community-based organisation with offices in all states and territories. Nutrition Australia is an independent body that aims to promote the health and well-being of all Australians, which includes useful information on physical activity for older adults.

The Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA)

The Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) is an organisation representing the interests of Australian physiotherapists and their patients. The APA is a national organisation with state and territory branches, allowing you to find a physiotherapist in your local area.

Diabetes Australia - New South Whales

Diabetes Australia is our leading charity dealing with diabetes in our country. For many years, they have helped Australians with diabetes hoping to reduce the impact that diabetes has on their lives. The Diabetes Australia-NSW website has useful information on keeping active and healthy eating, to help you reduce the risk of diabetes.

The Office of Senior Victorians is committed to enhancing the quality of life for seniors. This site has excellent information relating to positive ageing and keeping active.

Bushwalking

There are plenty of walking and bushwalking groups in all parts of Australia and many cater for all levels of activity and ability. Check with your local council for the group nearest you. The Seniors Portal has handy information on Sports and the outdoors, including information on, fishing, walking and playing golf.
