Reference tools

As well as providing a huge number of sites devoted to specific topics, the Internet provides access to electronic versions of more traditional reference tools such as dictionaries and encyclopaedias. A number of sites provide comprehensive listings of dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases etc. Some relevant ones are:

  • Bartelby. A very useful reference site with an extensive number of dictionaries, encyclopedias and other reference guides. As a literary resource it is highly ranked, although it does have advertising pop ups when you first visit the site.
  • National Geographic. The website for the popular magazine which has a highly comprehensive map database.
  • M-W. The online version of the Merriam Webster Dictionary.
  • Thesaurus.reference.com. An online thesaurus.
  • Ref desk. A comprehensive directory, and access to a large range of reference tools and online media and information.
