We were discussing Surfing Through Computers and the Internet
With Nathanael Boehm, Nan Bosler and DCITA
Computers and the internet are becoming increasingly important in Australian society and as the technology continues to change, evolve and improve they are becoming a bigger part in our everyday lives.
Computers provide a multitude of programs and applications that can often save you large amounts of time and present you with things you never thought were possible. Computers can help you write letters, organise your schedule, alter and print family photographs, make electronic copies of paper documents, organise your family tree, and even play games.
The internet allows people to interact and share information with each other. It is a fantastic research tool, which can help you search for information on just about any topic; from your favourite hobby to the history of Australia and beyond. You can also use the internet to quickly contact organisations or businesses, pay your bills, purchase tickets, bid in auctions for hard to find memorabilia or chat with people on the other side of the world – best of all, you can do it without leaving the comfort of your own home!
Even though computers and the internet can be very useful, sometimes using a computer or surfing the internet can be daunting and frustrating – especially with: numerous products and services on the market, descriptions that are often filled with technical jargon, acronyms that can prove very difficult to understand and programs and applications that simply don’t work.
What ever the question and regardless of whether you’re a computer professional or a novice this forum seeks to answer your questions about anything in relation to computers and the internet. Topics that you might have a question about could include: memory size, hardware, software, programs, internet security or spam.
You can also have a read through the following questions and answers and view a short background to each of our panel members: Nan Bosler (Australian Seniors Computing Clubs Association), Nathanael Boehm (Online Media Team – Seniors Portal) and the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts (DCITA). The following questions were answered:
| Question 1: | I have been having problems with my Broadband connection not consistantly connecting to the Internet service. I complained to my ISP who recommend that I fix filters on each of my two extra telephones in the house. I have an ADSL Router (DLink) with connections via an Inline DLink Filter/splitter - with one cable going to my Office telephone and the other to my Ethernet connection nearby on the computer. I have sought advice from other sources (e.g. Electronic Engineers etc) who say I should not need the filters for each telephone. I need your advice, can you help me? | View Answer |
| Question 2: | I have a large email in my mailbox which is affecting other emails coming through, and my service cuts out saying that some email is taking so long that the service is terminated. Every time I log on, I keep getting the same previous email that is clogging up the works. With my previous ISP I just used to go to their page, read the emails, and delete the offending email.
