About the Department of the Environment and Water Resources (DEWR)

Department of the Environment and Water Resources crest. The Australian Government takes a whole-of-government approach to achieving environmental sustainability through implementing and managing effective legislation, policies and programmes – an approach that is backed by historic levels of environmental spending. This is demonstrated by investment through the $3 billion Natural Heritage Trust and $1.4 billion National Action Plan on Salinity and Water Quality.

As a sustainable environment requires engagement from all levels of government and all sectors of the community, the Government is committed to working with, and for, all Australians. This commitment positions us well to meet ongoing and future challenges such as climate change, water reform, sustainable agriculture and the protection of our biodiversity.
