Question:
Can anyone help? I'm currently live in an aged care home and was wondering how to go about organising someone to come and conduct some exercise classes for us.
Answer:
Pauline-Many aged care homes are aware of the benefits of keeping residents moving and physically active to maintain best quality of life for everyone, as well as best standards for the facility itself.
A variety of exercise classes can be offered to include mobility, strength and balance work in an enjoyable and fun atmosphere (Easy Moves, dance and Tai chi are always popular). The difficulty often lies in a lack of appropriately qualified staff to conduct the classes.
While regulations vary in each state it would be advisable to speak to the Director or Manager of your facility and/or your Doctor or the physiotherapist to find out if it is feasible to bring in a qualified health professional or fitness instructor to set up a class (there will be some associated costs).
Holding a residents meeting and having an instructor or health professional speak on the benefits and different types of exercise programs proposed might help raise support as well as enthusiasm and motivation levels. Remember it is always important to make sure people check with their Doctor before starting any new exercise program. (How about some fun ‘Move it or lose it’ flyers around the place?) Active Ageing Australia conducts a nationally recognized leaders training program Easy Moves for Active Ageing -there may be qualified leaders in your area.
