Question:
I think it would be a great idea to start some kind of community exercise programme for me and my friends. Most of us are over the 60 mark and just need a bit of motivation to get us going. Any advice on how we could best set something up?
Answer:
Helen- It certainly is a good idea. Staying physically active and building up your muscle and bone strength is the best way to remain independent, to avoid many major diseases that creep up as we age and to get the best out of life. To get started either:
1 - Contact your State Department of Sport and Recreation or local government body which should have a listing of all community physical activity classes and programs. You and your friends could then join an existing group.
2- If there is no existing group for you to tap into why not start your own group in a community or church hall and then engaging a qualified and registered fitness trainer. To find such a person contact your local Fitness Registration body. They have lists of registered and properly qualified instructors and can assist in finding you the right person for your group if you explain where, when and how you would like a program to be conducted.
