We are discussing Physical Activity - Being Out and About
With Entry not found in index

Question:
My doctor has advised me to start exercising but I’m not sure what sort of exercise is best. I’m worried about hurting myself. I am 78.

Answer:
Helen-It is never too late to start exercising and at 78 you can definitely improve your health status and your stamina. I would suggest that you start with walking for 15 or 20 minutes each week, preferably with a friend who walks at the same pace as yourself and then gradually increase your pace or increase the length of your walks. Make sure that you wear good supportive shoes.

I would also suggest that you go to a seniors program the YMCA of Canberra runs programs in 25 locations throughout Canberra – phone (02) 61620991) to strengthen your muscles and improve your balance. If you find walking too difficult it would be advisable to attend such a program twice a week until your walking ability improves
