Question & Answer

We are discussing Physical Activity - Being Out and About
With Entry not found in index

Question:
I have been keeping fairly active (walking several kilometres each day) until three months ago, when I had a major operation (stomach surgery), and have been slowly recovering since. My family are telling me that I should just rest, but I want to get back to regular walking. What is your advice?

Answer:
Keith-At any age, people need time to recover from surgery. However, after three months, unless you have any complications from your surgery (in which case you need the advice of your doctor), then you should be able to slowly resume a walking or other exercise program.

You will need to start off at a gentle pace, and perhaps start with a short (perhaps 10 minutes) program for the first one to two weeks, then gradually build this up (perhaps 5-10 minutes extra each 1-2 weeks). Over a couple of months, it is likely you should be able to return to your previous level of activity.
