Question:
I am 78 and am feeling a little unsteady on my feet (no falls, but a number of near misses). Are there any exercises I can do to help my balance?

Answer:
Keith-There are a number of different types of exercises that can improve your balance and reduce your risk of having falls.

Group exercise programs that incorporate balance, strength, fitness and coordination type of exercises can help a successful program has been conducted by the Monash University Accident Research Centre.

Tai chi is another form of exercise that has been shown to reduce falls. A third approach involves exercises that you can do at home, prescribed by a physiotherapist.

If you have any concerns about what type of exercises to do, find a physiotherapist who can assess your abilities, and determine the best exercises for you.
