Question & Answer

We are discussing Nutrition for a happy, healthy life
With Jacinta Dugbaza, Sarah Flanagan and Vinni Dang

Question:
Why is good nutrition important for me when I'm older?

Answer:
Jacinta - Good nutrition and healthy eating habits are not dependent on age, they are important at every stage of life. In most individuals, getting older brings about a gradual decline in normal body functions. However, many of the normal changes and illnesses associated with getting older can be reduced through healthy eating and continued active lifestyle.

Contrary to popular belief, the body’s basic need for proteins, vitamins and minerals does not decrease with age. In fact, some of these nutrients may be needed in greater amounts.

The main food requirement that changes with age is ENERGY or CALORIES. The amount of energy/calories required decreases with age because of the decline in the body’s use of energy, but it is also dependent on individual levels of physical activity.

Proteins, vitamins and minerals are the food materials most likely to be lacking in the diet of older adults. The challenge is how to develop a healthy eating plan that provides adequate amounts of these nutrients with the right amount of energy.
