Question:
I care for my grandmother and she has always refused to eat green vegetables. Lately she has taken to refusing anything I cook for her. I believe as she is quite frail, controlling her food is the only thing left for her to control but I am worried she doesn't get even basic requirements for health. Are there some high nutrient foods I should try to feed her, or continue the hopeless quest of trying to entice her to eat the healthy food I cook?
Answer:
Vinni - Ensuring that the elderly achieve an adequate food intake is a common challenge. In providing for optimal nutrition for your grandmother, consider the following:
*With age, people's sense of taste and smell starts declining, which can often lead to a loss of appetite. A solution would be to create meals which are increased in flavour. Try flavouring meals with herbs and spices and limiting salt.
*Take care in the presentation of the meals. An attractive meal always stimulates the appetite.
*Encourage small frequent meals, as she may not be able to eat large amounts in one sitting.
*You may also need to consider preparing meals in a variety of textures (such as a softer diet) as both chewing and swallowing can be difficult, affecting her eating ability.
*A variety of meals that include nutrient dense foods and food textures may also stimulate her appetite. Nutrient dense foods include eggs, lean meats, fish, low fat dairy, nuts and seeds, and wholegrain breads and cereals.
*And finally, serve with a generous portion of physical activity. Physical activity is safe for all ages and conditions. An active lifestyle can not only promote strength, balance and flexibility, but can also boot appetite.
It would also be a good idea to discuss the use of supplements with your doctor or an Accredited Practicing Dietitian in your local area.
