Question:
I have a physical disability which precludes me from exercise. How can I burn more calories? I am 6kg over my ideal weight and just can't move them.
Answer:
Vinni - There are many ways to calculate your ideal weight for your height (such as the body mass index, or BMI), but these methods don't always apply to
people with a disability. For you, a helpful guide is the waist to hip ratio If the waist measurement exceeds the hip measurement, you may need to lose weight. The benefits of losing just five to 10 centimetres off your waist can significantly reduce the risk of many conditions, including diabetes and heart disease. You should consult a doctor or a dietitian in your area for help in calculating your ideal weight range, and for strategies on achieving your goal weight.
Even though you have a disability with reduced mobility, it is important to
remember that any degree of activity is helpful. For example, even somebody
confined to wheelchair can still lead a very active lifestyle. Exercising in water can often be easier, as the buoyancy of the water can offer some support. Gentle stretching can prevent muscle contraction and wasting. For
an individually planned exercise program, you may consider consulting your doctor or physiotherapist for further information. For an individualised diet plan, consult your local dietitian.
