Menopause occurs when a woman ceases her period (menstruation). This is a natural event that marks the end of the reproductive years. The production of sex hormones such as oestrogen falls significantly during menopause, while testosterone levels decrease gradually from the age of thirty. The reduction of these hormones may directly affect libido and sexual function. Menopause affects every woman differently; other important issues that may affect women who are menopausal can be physical changes, body image, external stresses, emotional imbalance and relationship issues.

Male menopause is an inappropriate term as it suggests a misleading comparison with the dramatic end of reproductive function in women. Unlike women, whose oestrogen levels fall rapidly when they go through menopause, men's testosterone levels fall much less and far more gradually. Also, unlike women, not all men are affected by a decline in testosterone levels as they age.

The onset of early menopause is addressed by The Jean Hailes Foundation website. For further information visit HealthInsite: Menopause.
