MBA Lifestyle Housing for Seniors Award - 2002
This Award recognises best practice in the design and construction of affordable dwellings for Australia’s seniors with the aim of influencing members of the building industry to consider the housing needs of an ageing population.
National Lifestyle Housing for Seniors – Purpose Built Dwelling
Winner: Becton Corporation from Victoria for the East Brighton ProjectThe project comprises a community development for persons over 55, offering residents a choice of apartment or villa style living. This, combined with central facilities such as restaurants, a library, community centre, pool and a high level of security ensures a comfortable and relaxing environment. Each unit or apartment is fully self contained and offers a degree of flexibility in design and fitments to all new residents. The judges considered this project to be exceptional value for money.
National Lifestyle Housing for Seniors – Special Award
Winner: South Australian Housing Trust for the People Friendly Housing ProgramThis Program involves the construction of new dwellings, refurbishment of existing dwellings and the redevelopment of some sites. The South Australian Housing Trust has demonstrated a total commitment to the ideals of allowing people to age in their own home. This program ensures that all work carried out, whether it be new or existing, complies with the philosophy of ensuring people remain in their own home for longer periods. The judges spoke to residents who were part of this program, all of whom gave glowing reports of their new style home.
National Lifestyle Housing for Seniors – Extension and Modification
Winner: JCW Wilson Builders from Newcastle for the Merewether ProjectThis project is a two storey house that has been modified specifically to enable the residents to age in their own home. The current set up allows for two families to live within the one building and has totally adaptable features including a lift to accommodate a wheelchair. The features that accommodate the ageing process have been very tastefully done, while provision has been made for the use of additional features to be incorporated should the need arise. The standard of workmanship on this project was exceptional as was, in the judges opinion, value for money.
