MBA Lifestyle Housing for Seniors Award - 2005

This Award recognises best practice in the design and construction of affordable dwellings for Australia’s seniors with the aim of influencing members of the building industry to consider the housing needs of an ageing population.

Purpose Built Dwellings – 10 units and under

Winner: Kell and Rigby, Mariner Park
This project uses ultra modern design with composite materials and includes features to allow for the occupants to age in place. Special consideration is given to incorporating adaptable housing standards and bathrooms provide flexibility to cater for the future needs of the residents. Wider doorways and open floor plans create an environment that facilitates efficient mobility for all needs.

Purpose Built Dwellings - 10 units and over

Winner: Tarragal Glen Constructions for Glengara Retirement Village
Glengara Retirement Village created its master plan to characterise a resort style atmosphere with gardens set on 40 landscaped hectares on the Central Coast of NSW. The two and three bedroom villas all have attached garages and provide spaciousness, privacy, safety and security. The residents have access to a community centre located within the development. The dwellings are designed with great attention to detail to eliminate trip hazards. The entry steps are all flush with external doors and non-slip surfaces. Provision to incorporate adaptable features in the kitchens and bathrooms make these units very attractive.

Small To Medium Multi Unit Development

Winner: Project Coordination (Australia) Staverton Place
The builders of this multi storey apartment complex considered secure access a key priority. This is achieved by very accessible ramps to the front doors which open into a wide foyer giving access to the lift which contains all the features required by people with varying disabilities. Each unit has alert systems which inform other occupants in the complex that emergency assistance is required. Within the units, great attention to detail provides adaptable features in the kitchens where bench tops can be lowered. Clever selection of floor materials provides for non-slip and reduced trip hazards.

Medium To Large Multi Unit Development

Winner: Grindley Construction for Constitution Hill
This project is considered exceptional in all areas. The design creates an atmosphere for occupants to feel safe and comfortable within their homes. The site provides a high ratio of landscaped gardens and outdoor community areas which creates a unique feeling of spacious and open living within a major capital city. Access to all areas of the complex is made easy by well marked non-slip walkways and driveways. The homes boast plenty of floor area with large balconies and incorporate many adaptable design features cater for all occupants’ needs. The communal areas provide many features including craft rooms, barbecue areas and hobby rooms all available to the residents.
