MBA Lifestyle Housing for Seniors Award - 2004
This Award recognises best practice in the design and construction of affordable dwellings for Australia’s seniors with the aim of influencing members of the building industry to consider the housing needs of an ageing population.
Purpose Built Dwellings – 10 units or under
Winner: Capezio and Company for Oakleigh, ACT.The design blends into the streetscape brilliantly with the use of reused roof tiles to create an effect in conjunction with other design elements to meet the heritage issues under the planning scheme. Adaptable features throughout the home include modular cupboards and adjustable bench heights. Security parking has been provided to all buildings and the bathrooms have been designed to cater for wheelchair access with minimal alterations. The smart use of sliding doors adds to space and makes it easier for people with disabilities to open and negotiate.
Purpose Built Dwellings - 10 units or more
Winner: Bells Construction and Technologies for Glenara Lakes, Tasmania.Extensive site cuts and retaining walls were incorporated into this design to reduce steps and ramps. The design consists of large rooms with easy access for wheelchairs if required. Bathrooms and wet area finishes have all been considered for slip resistance and facilities such as grab rails and other devices have been provided. The external paving around the homes is extensive, allowing easy access for people in wheelchairs and walking frames to negotiate around the building. Tripping hazards at entry points to the home and garage were eliminated.
Purpose Built Dwellings – Multi Unit Development
Winner: BG Architecture and Age Old Builders for Sheridan Hall, Melbourne. This complex is ideally located a short distance from shops and other utilities. Quality workmanship converted the existing Edwardian building into common areas of use by occupants. The designers extended out the rear of the existing building with ultramodern apartments - all with balconies. Quality fittings have been used throughout the complex, including a great functional floorplan with adaptable features built into the design. Units have been designed for ease of mobility with bathrooms easily able to accommodate the disabled and frail. Some of the units incorporate private gardens and outdoor terraces that require minimum maintenance. Whilst the staircases add to the ambience of the complex, lifts are installed for those who wish to minimise their distance of travel. The judges considered this complex great value for money.
