The '64 Beatles Tour of Australia
The year was 1964, and Australia was engulfed by ‘Beatlemania’; The Beatles were coming to Australia! Thanks to Australian music promoter Kenn Brodziak, who had simply liked the sound of their name, the Beatles visited Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. They played to over 200,000 screaming fans, comprised of young teenage girls who had convinced their parents to let them attend, boys who were following in their foot steps and breaking boundaries by growing their hair, to the mothers and Grandmothers. In half an hour the Beatles played ten songs, from ‘I Saw Her Standing There’, ‘She Loves You’, to ‘This Boy’ and ‘Twist and Shout’.
Now, 40 years later, Australia and Australian pop have not forgotten the boys with the long hair and the lyrics that reached us all, nor have we stopped listening to their songs. The Beatles have had a profound effect on fashion and music, and in their day, lead the way for the following trends. The Beatles have appealed to all generations and are still widely loved by all. Let’s look back to 1964 and read the stories of those that were there in the streets, or at the concerts, including a story from Bob Rogers who was lucky enough to tour with the Beatles!
Exciting News - Thank you to everyone who took the time to send in their story and photo. We have been delighted with the response and encourage everyone to continue to write and to contribute to the recording of Australian history through the Seniors Portal 'Living History'. Bob Rogers has kindly donated a wonderful prize for the best story, and we would like to announce that he has chosen the story 'A dream come true', by Mary. Thank you Bob.
