Living History
Australian Rules Football
‘Footy’ has been part of our national identity since 1858, when the first officially recorded match of Australian Rules was played between Melbourne Grammar School and Scotch College.
In 1925 the Victorian Football League (VFL), which later transformed into the Australian Football League (AFL), consisted of 12 teams: Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St Kilda, South Melbourne, Footscray, Hawthorn and North Melbourne. The decades that followed saw some of the true legends of the game take to the field - Dick Reynolds in the thirties and forties, Ron Barassi and Graham 'Polly' Farmer in the fifties and sixties, and Ian Stewart and Alex Jesaulenko in the sixties and seventies, amongst others. In addition to VFL and interstate games, and the many semi-professional and amateur leagues in Victoria and interstate, Australian Rules was also being played in schools and backyards around the country.
Special features - Ron Barassi and Barry Price! We were very fortunate this Living History to feature material from two football legends: photographs from Ron Barassi, and a story from Barry Price!
What are your favourite footy memories? We wanted to hear about any aspect of football, from sitting on the edge of your seat during the many nail-biting grand finals or meeting famous players and coaches, to playing footy in the backyard or at school with friends and family. Which team do you support and why?
