Question & Answer

We are discussing Lifelong - Lifewide Learning
With Barbara Pamphilon, Dorothy Braxton, Mary Hannan and Gloria Robbins

Question:
My daughter has been offered a post on a property 100k from Alice Springs. Her 8 year old son would be enrolled in the Alice Springs School of the Air. He has reading problems. What help would he be able to access?

Answer:
Gloria - The School of the Air provides individualised lesson packages, the presentation of interesting radio lessons, instructional videos, computers, and there is personal contact with a dedicated teacher each day. It is constantly developing new communications technology. The radio has always been the backbone of communication.

Improved phone links have also given access to direct family contact with the teachers. The school runs its own ISP (Internet Service Provider). Families have the option of connecting to the school via their own computers and modem. This allows for fast transfer of work, exchange of ideas and support of learning.

Another avenue for one-to-one home help with his reading problem as well as his general school work would be for your daughter to contact VISE (Volunteers for Isolated Students' Education). VISE provides volunteer tutors who spend between six and twelve weeks each year in the outback. In most cases they stay with one family for six weeks. They liaise with the child's School of Distance Education and provide one-to-one tutoring with the students in their own home.

For more information look at the VISE web site: http://www.vise.org.au which includes a link to the Schools of the Air.
