Question & Answer

We are discussing Lifelong - Lifewide Learning
With Barbara Pamphilon, Dorothy Braxton, Mary Hannan and Gloria Robbins

Question:
I am a 53 years old, Sydney based woman. I have a marketing/marcoms background and have run my own marcoms consultancy for 10 years. I am an Australian citizen but my education was in the UK. I have 9 'O'Level and 3 'A' Level GCE's and a Higher National Diploma in Business with Languages (pass degree equivalent).

I now wish to go back and study and change direction. TEFOL is one of the areas I am considering. I have 2 questions:
1. Would my UK education qualify me for university here?
2. Would I qualify for mature age retraining assistance and/or HECS/HELP?
Many thanks for your assistance.

Answer:
Barbara - Given your prior study and your work experience you would be able to apply to university as a mature age student . Have a look at the government website -
http://www.goingtouni.gov.au

The other site you need to look at is
http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/individuals/st_index.htm
and this will give you lots of leads.

As people have such different situations I cannot give you exact advice, however once you have read these sites you will be ready to contact your university of choice – teaching English to speakers of other languages is a rewarding area and of growing importance in our wonderfully diverse country..
Best wishes
