Question & Answer

We are discussing Lifelong - Lifewide Learning
With Barbara Pamphilon, Dorothy Braxton, Mary Hannan and Gloria Robbins

Question:
What is the best was to learn more about computers? I have a basic knowledge but would like to learn more eg photos, cards designing for birthdays and anniversaries, and what games and software and how secure is my computer.

Answer:
Gloria - I don't really think there is a 'best' way. I think you learn more by talking to friends with similar interests, joining a computer club, doing a course, finding tutorials on the internet, visiting your local library, reading computer books and magazines which often have cds with tutorials supplied with them.

As you mention computer security and that you already have some computer skills, I gather you are already connected to the net and can send/receive email and search for information with Google.

As it is important that you know how to manage your system I would suggest you either purchase the book 'Windows XP for Dummies' (useful for all levels of computer literacy) or look up the web site. http://www.pcseriescomputers.com.au/pcseriescomputers_004.htm . They have produced an excellent set of inexpensive guidebooks.

If you already have Microsoft Publisher as part of Microsoft Office, there is ample help provided in how to make various types of cards and if you have a scanner there are many free tutorials on the net to help you save and edit your photos on your computer. Just enter 'scanner tutorial' (without the quotes) into Google. Always remember to make use of the help supplied at the top right of the screen for most programs!

Now for the last part of your question. It is essential that you have installed a reliable antivirus program which can automatically update and so check for any new threats to your system. I would recommend Symantec's Norton Internet Security 2005 and also that you install the free program, Spybot Search and Destroy, which you can download from the Net. It is also necessary to have a firewall installed. A firewall helps protect your computer by preventing unauthorized users from gaining access to it through a network or the Internet. Windows XP has its own firewall which you can enable and there is also one in Norton Internet Security 2005.

I hope this gives you some ideas on increasing your knowledge. Good Luck!
