Question:
I have always envied my friends who went to university straight from school and now that my children are in high school I am thinking I might give it a go as the local university has some degrees I am interested in, but I am very worried that I cant use computers - would that be a big problem?
Answer:
Barbara - It is a great idea to do your own study when your children are in high school as your activities really set such a good example for teenagers - they see the time needed to do well and the planning of assignments and you can go off to libraries together!
But I definitely would recommend that you do an introductory computer subject at an evening class. You don’t need to have your own computer at home as most universities have computer labs for students, but if you can afford one it does make life easier.
I would also recommend that you go down to your local library at a quiet time and ask the librarian to show you how to search the catalogue and the internet using their computer - it is an excellent skill to have before you start uni, although once again all good universities will have introductory sessions on this - but you will be well ahead if you have started to develop your skills through the local library.
