Feedback
On Saturday 1 October 2005, the Hon Gary Nairn MP, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and member for Eden-Monaro launched a book of stories and photographs , entitled Inspiring, not Retiring, as part of the celebrations for the National Day for Older Australians.
The National Day for Older Australians was introduced by the Minister for Ageing, the Hon Julie Bishop MP to recognise the remarkable contributions that older Australians make to their families and communities
Inspiring, not Retiring has been developed to honour the lives and achievements of a selection of Australians who were nominees for the National Australia Day Council Senior Australian of the Year Award (2005).
These older Australians, from every State and Territory, relate their motivational stories involving active participation of seniors in every aspect of community life, from educating children and adults, making puddings for charity, preserving our heritage, building schools, encouraging participation in sport, helping those in need both in Australia and overseas and contributing to science.
The amazing Australians highlighted in Inspiring, not Retiring remind us all that no matter how old we are, we have something valuable to offer our community. Recognising and celebrating the contribution of these inspirational older people should encourage and motivate us all to be involved with our communities and to acknowledge and applaud those who already give so much.
The book is available free of charge by calling the National Mail and Marketing hotline on (02) 6269 1000. You will need to quote the title: Inspiring, not Retiring and the order code: ST001
The book is also available for download on the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing website.
