Question:
I have a lady who has Osteoporosis and has two flights of stairs in her house what modifications could I make to make it easier for her?

Answer:
Neil-Usually I recommend that stairs in homes for seniors should be designed and manufactured to use the maximum tread width and the minimum riser height set out in the Building Code of Australia.

Stair manufacturers know these minimum and maximum dimensions and will design the stair accordingly, which will allow for easier travel up and down the stairs. The surfaces of the treads should be slip resistant and preferably not covered in thick pile carpet and a hand rail should be securely fixed to one or preferably both sides of the stair to provide maximum stability.
