Question:
I want to install some grab rails in my shower and I am not sure where the best place is to put them. Can you give me some advice?

Answer:
Merridy - The placement of the grab rail is dependent on the configuration/layout of the shower and the individual’s abilities and size. Many local councils or health services will provide assistance with supply and installation of grabrails. Call Commonwealth Care Link on 1800 052 2222 for information on services in your area.

A horizontal rail placed at 800mm from the floor on both walls in the shower and another horizontal rail at 800mm just outside the shower compartment will suffice for most situations. But there are a number of things you should consider before installing the grabrails:

1. What are the rail(s) needed for – Do you need support to enter and leave the shower, to sit down or rise from a shower chair and / or during showering? Look at where you would be reaching for support during these tasks and consider placing a rail at these points.

2. Your height & arm length will influence the position that is comfortable for you.

3. Check that the placement of the rail will not interfere with; the closing of the shower door/curtain; the use of the taps & soap dish; the space needed to get in and out of the shower; and position of the shower chair.

4. The grab rail must be securely fixed to the wall. For brick or cement walls, the rail can be safely attached in any position. For timber walls the rail must be attached to the stud. The location of the plumbing also needs to be considered.
