Question & Answer

We are discussing Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
With Deanne O'Keefe and Anne Clarke

Question:
The Dental Van at my grandson’s school refused to examine his teeth and I have had problems getting his immunisation boosters. His mother has agreed that he can live with me, and that I can do these things for him. I have Medicare Card for him, but they were not content with this. What can I do to prevent this happening again and to be able to access any treatment for him?

Answer:
Deanne - I would suggest that you need to have his placement with you set out legally, either by Court Order, or by a letter of authority from his mother, through a Solicitor.

The rules pertaining to persons seeking treatment, which is not life-threatening, without written permission from the natural parent, or registered caregiver, are quite specific, and, are made to protect the children, as well as the relevant persons giving the required treatment. This can be quite frustrating to the caregiver.

You could start by contacting Family Law Online or they have a hotline you can call on 1800 050 321
