Question & Answer

We are discussing Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
With Deanne O'Keefe and Anne Clarke

Question:
I am a part-time carer of two of my grandchildren so I don't know if I can get help. There is a growing tension between myself and my own daughter, so I need to get some help.

Answer:
Deanne - You do not say the type of help you need. Is it financial, physical or emotional? Do you care for your grandchildren on a full-time basis, i.e. 24hrs. per day, or are you caring for them while their mother works? Depending upon the circumstances, different avenues of assistance are available, to you.

There are support groups which deal with different aspects, of grandparenting, and without knowing exactly what you need, it is very difficult to offer you one. You may be entitled to some Centrelink benefits, to assist financially.

I would also suggest that you, and your daughter, try to work out your differences, for the sake of these wonderful children, and to protect your relationship. Lifeline offers a great Mediation service, and Counselling, which may be beneficial to you. Their number is 13 11 14.

It would be appreciated if you would come back with more information, so that I may assist more.

Anne - If you are already a Centrelink customer, you may wish to contact Centrelink on 13 10 21 to make an appointment to see someone at your nearest Customer Service Centre. Customer Service Officers and Centrelink specialist officers such as Social Workers may be able to assist you.

In addition the Family Relationships Services Program funded by the Department of Family and Community Services provides a range of assistance to families including information and referral, counselling and mediation.

If you contact Lifeline Counselling on 13 11 14 you can explain your circumstances further and get referred to the closest service that will meet your needs.

If you would like to write back and can tell the Department more about your specific circumstances, we will be able to help you with some additional information about other assistance or possible entitlements.
