Question & Answer

We are discussing Gardening, Growing and Green Thumbs!
With Brian Walters, Diana O'Brien and Pauline Cornish

Question:
Our garden has recently been invaded by Indian mynahs. How can we discourage these pests?

Answer:
Diana - You can add Indian mynahs to the list of Australias' undesirable introduced species of fauna and flora along with cane toads, prickly pear, Patterson's Curse and other things we can do without or rather not have.

Unfortunately, as yet, there is no way that you can discourage them without also discouraging the other feathered friends that you would otherwise be happy to have visit your garden.

While gardeners with fruit trees often say that rubber snakes hung in trees, or unwanted CD's suspended on fishing lines might keep most birds away for a while, it is usually only until they get used to them.

Some local authorities have waged war on Indian mynahs as a predatory bird of Australian native species, and introduced trial methods of capture and extermination - you will have to check with your own town/city council to see if there is any similar programme in effect. Sad to say, until there is it seems there is little that is legal that you can do.
