Question:
Do passionfruit vines have invading root systems. I would like to plant one near a fence that has sewer pipes along side it. This is hot area.

Answer:
Pauline - I have never known the roots of Passionfruit to be a problem in drains. Having said that, if there are any cracks in the sewer pipe it is natural for any plant roots to move into an easy source of moisture, particularly in these dry conditions.

It is best not to plant directly over sewer lines because at any time the area may need digging up for repairs and it is always disappointing to loose a mature plant.

If you can, plant at least a metre or more away from the sewer pipes and make a frame so the plant can grow along it until it reaches the fence line.

Passionfruit is very vigorous and will cover a large area. The best position for Passionfruit is a sunny spot sheltered from frost. They are a delicious fruit well worth growing so goodluck.
