Question & Answer

We are discussing Gardening, Growing and Green Thumbs!
With Brian Walters, Diana O'Brien and Pauline Cornish

Question:
I have an area that was once a lawn and it is now a dust bowl. Can I plant some ground covers to cover up the bare soil?

Answer:
Pauline - Yes, what a good idea. Not only will the plants stop all the dust, it will be nice to have something green to look at.

Firstly, all remaining weeds must be removed. If you have couch grass spray with Glyphoshate, most other weeds can be dug out.

Take time to prepare the soil well; if the area is small, dig it over with a garden fork to loosen the soil and then add lots and lots of compost. Incorporate this into the existing soil. Apply gypsum is the soil is heavy clay.

Time spent preparing the soil will mean that the plants are more likely to thrive.
