Three questions about food poisoning:

1. Do you know that as we get older our stomach produces less acid?
2. Do you know that this makes it easier for harmful germs to get through the digestive system and invade our bodies?
3. Do you know that if we get food poisoning we are likely to suffer more severe consequences ranging from mild dehydration to neuromuscular dysfunction?

Yes, we are at greater risk of food poisoning as we get older and the consequences are more severe if we do get it.

The Food Safety Information Council is a non-profit group. It was set up to help reduce the over five million cases of food poisoning in Australia each year by educating consumers to handle food safely from the time it leaves the retailer until it appears on the plate. The Council’s website has lots of fact sheets giving useful tips to prevent foods poisoning in different situations such as having a party, cooking a BBQ, camping etc as well as tips on storing and cooking food at home.
