Flu is caused by a virus that is passed from person to person by coughing or sneezing. It can lead to illnesses that are more severe than those caused by other respiratory viruses, such as the common cold. Some people, especially those aged over 65 years and those with certain chronic medical conditions, can suffer complications from the flu.

The flu vaccine is a very important way to help prevent you from catching the flu. The best time to be vaccinated is in autumn, before the outbreak of flu in winter. The vaccine is free for people who are over 65 and is available from your medical practitioner. Further information is available at the Immunisation web site.
