Question:
How can I find out about my grandfather’s war service record? He served with Australian forces.
Answer:
Jennifer - The National Archives of Australia holds the records for WW1 and WW2 service personnel. You will be able to obtain a copy of his service records from the Archives. They have a good information guide
There is an online index for those who served during World War 2
The Nominal Roll. for service people in World War 1 is found on the Australian War Memorial website. WW1 Embarkation Rolls are also found on this website and include such information as name and age of serving person, address at time of enlistment, next of kin and the name of the ship on which they embarked to leave Australia
The Australian War memorial website also contains other indexes and digitized images to assist you with research into your service man/woman. These include Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing Enquiry Bureau files, South Pacific Prisoner of War lists and Honor Roll circulars.
If your grandfather did not come back from the war, the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s database lists men and women of the Commonwealth forces who died during the two world wars and the cemeteries, memorials and other locations worldwide where they are commemorated. The register can also be searched for details of the 67,000 Commonwealth civilians who died as a result of enemy action in the Second World War.
