Question:
My great grandfather's marriage certificate shows that he was born in Devonshire however there is only 1 record of his father who was born in Louth Ireland and was serving in India (Army) at the time of his birth. What is the best way of checking Indian bdm records please?

Answer:
Jennifer - As you haven't supplied a time range or information about which (British or Indian) army your great grandfather served with, I will give you some websites with good information on the British in India. Some of these websites contain indexes to baptisms, marriages and civil registrations of British births etc overseas.

The British Library holds records of the East India Company's armies. You will find information about research into their holdings of the armies and more generally about their holdings of India Office records . These records may contain Ecclesiastical (or church) Records.

Regimental Records of Births in the British Army are held at The National Archives (in England) or at the Family Records centre in London.

Free indexes are available at the familyrelatives.org website .

Other useful websites include:
* Army military records

* British in India records

Two websites for researchers of British family History in India are Families In British India Society and Family History in India . Both contain indexes to baptisms and/or marriages records and other material.
