Question & Answer

We are discussing Tracing family history
With Antoinette Buchanan, Stephanie Ryan and Jennifer Higgins

Question:
My son-in-law's grandparents met and wed in a refugee centre at Landshut Germany. How could I trace this and the birth of their 2 sons for my son-in-law?

Answer:
Stephanie - There are four possibilities you may wish to follow in this research:

1.National Archives of Australia may have information from the International Refugee Organisation related to the marriage and birth as part of their Immigration Case Files. You could check the National Archives of Australia website and search by the name of the migrant. Only some of their records are on the net so you could email them at archives@naa.gov.au.

2.The United Nations Archives and Records Management Section
The refugee camp at Landshut after the Second World War appears to have been run by the UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration). Browse through the Archives and Record Management section website for more information.

3.The State Archives of Landshut
Public records are decentralised in Germany and it is not uncommon for each town to have its own public records office. Landshut Archives may be able to provide you with further help.

The archivist is Dr Martin Ruth.

4.The Red Cross also holds information on former prisoners of war under their care. Records before 1950 are held with the Archives of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent. For more information have a look at the International Commitee of the Red Cross website or you can e-mail them at archives.gva@icrc.org.
