Question & Answer

We are discussing Falls Prevention
With Suzanne Ralston and Beverley Steer

Question:
My family tells me that now I am retired I should be putting my feet up and taking it easy. I would like to be more active but my family are worried it might be too much. What should I do?

Answer:
Suzanne-Well meaning family and friends can often give advice based on good intention. However, it is very important to stay active as you get older and it is never too late to start. As we get older we often reduce the amount of activity we do. This can lead to loss of muscle tone, strength and bulk, which can dramatically increase our chance of falling. If we don’t use it, we lose it!

It’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor before starting any new activities or exercise program. Once you get the all clear, a physiotherapist could assist with putting together a program suitable for you. You could also join a local group or class, or you could exercise with family, friends or on your own. It’s a good idea to start slowly and gradually build up the amount of activity. You local council will have details of activities available in your local area. It is important that you choose an activity that you enjoy and you will be more likely to stick with it. Good luck!
