Community Development Employment Projects
The Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP) scheme looks to enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations to take control of their own community, its economic and social development, and to provide employment for people in their communities. If you work on one of these projects, you forgo your entitlement to social security allowances such as Newstart (unemployment) benefits in return for working on the CDEP for wages.
Age Pensioners, along with people on other pension type payments (such as Parenting Payment single), can continue to work on CDEP, however their pensions will be reduced on a dollar for dollar basis against any CDEP earnings, up to a threshold beyond which CDEP wages will be treated in the same way as other forms of income.
Community Development Employment Projects Placement Incentive
One of the main objectives of this part of the CDEP scheme is to act as a staging post for Indigenous participants to move into the mainstream labour market. If you leave the CDEP and go into on-going employment of at least 15 hours a week your CDEP organisation may be eligible for this incentive payment. This payment is made when you are either employed by a CDEP organisation or your job is funded by CDEP grant funds. You must be being paid full award rates and not be on the CDEP schedule or receiving CDEP wages.
Your CDEP organisation will receive $700 when you start employment and a further $1,500 when you have been employed for 20 weeks.
