Some older people wish to continue driving their own car for as long as possible.

To do this, they need to be aware that most Australian states and territories have medical and/or driving test requirements which older drivers (usually those over 75 years) must meet to retain their driver’s licences.

In July 2007 the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) released a discussion paper “Licensing of Older Drivers” and invited submissions from the community.

Further details on the discussion paper are available at NSW Parliament.

Some of the submissions are available for viewing at the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority.

Information on the various state and territory medical and testing requirements can be found at:

ACT

NSW

Queensland

South Australia

Tasmania

Victoria

Western Australia

The Northern Territory has no mandatory requirements - ring 08 8999 3111 for further information.

If you move permanently to another state or territory, you will have to apply for a driver's licence there.
