Question & Answer

We are discussing Living with Diabetes
With Angela Blair, Kristen Hazelwood and the Department of Health and Ageing

Question:
I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. What can I eat?

Answer:
Angela - If you have been diagnosed with diabetes it is important that you get a referral to a dietitian to give you specific dietary advice tailored to your personal situation.

Until you are able to see a dietitian it is important to remember that healthy eating for people with diabetes is the same as the advice recommended for all people and that is to follow the Australian dietary guidelines.

  • Eat plenty of wholegrain cereals (bread, rice pasta, noodles), vegetables, legumes and fruit
  • Eat moderate amounts of lean meat, fish, poultry and low fat dairy or alternatives.
  • Limit saturated fat and have a moderate fat intake overall
  • Choose low salt foods
  • Sugar in Moderation
  • Balance food intake with activity.
  • For more information call Diabetes Australia customer care line 1300 136 588 and ask to speak to one of the dietitians.
