About Dementia
Dementia is a broad term used to describe loss of memory, intellect, social skills and ordinary emotional responses. It is caused by deterioration in several areas of the brain. The person with dementia may find it increasingly difficult to perform previously familiar tasks, such as remembering, self-care, numeracy skills, and even speaking.About Dementia provides information on the signs and symptoms of dementia. Information on the range of support services for people with dementia, their carers, family and friends is also provided. Dementia Education and Support Program
This Australian Government program is delivered through Alzheimers Australia and provides education and support services to people with dementia and their carers.As part of this program, a national 24 hour telephone and support service is offered through the Dementia Helpline. The Helpline is staffed by trained and experienced advisers and is private and confidential. Practical advice, information about services available and support and understanding is offered.
The adviser you speak to may suggest some next steps with you and can arrange a meeting with a counsellor.

Early Stages Dementia Support and Respite Project
The Early Stages Dementia Support and Respite Project assists people in the early stages of dementia to stay longer in their own homes. It does this by providing formal information program for carers and for the person suffering from dementia.It offers an ongoing support program after the formal sessions have been completed. The sessions are conducted once a week and run for six to eight weeks. The sessions are split into two groups - one for carers and one for people with dementia. Participants learn about the progress of the condition and are helped to plan for the future.
Legal Planning and Dementia
Alzheimers’ Australia has released a new book on ‘Legal Planning and Dementia’. Although the focus is on people with dementia and their families, the information is still relevant to any older person. The book offers useful information on such topics as:- legal planning
- legal implications of dementia
- legal planning resources available to you in your State or Territory
- financial decisions
- medical treatment
- driving
- employment
