Question:
Are there any cookbooks or nutrition guides available from the government?
Answer:
Jacinta - The Australian Government through the dietary guidelines seeks to promote to all Australians the potential benefits of healthy eating not only to reduce the risks of diet-related illness but also to improve the community's health and wellbeing. The Dietary Guidelines for Australian Adults (DGAA) provide dietary information aimed at healthy, independent adults including older adults.
The DGAA consumer information pamphlet, Food for Health, describes and provides examples of foods in the various food groups. The pamphlet also provides a table of recommended number of serves that people of different age groups need to eat daily from each food group. This resource can be downloaded from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing website or hard copies can be requested from the Department.
In addition, information on healthy eating at the various life stages and tips on how to maintain nutritious food intake on a daily basis can be found at the Department’s Healthy Active - Healthy Weight website. To access the relevant information, click on Healthy Eating at Various Lifestages and then the appropriate age group. In addition, the Go for 2&5site at the Healthy Active website also provides information on healthy eating and physical activity with emphasis on the need for daily consumption of fruits and vegetables with sample meal plans and recipes.
