Sacked because of The Beatles

Hi! I know that there is no possibility of winning anything here (as I’m 32!), but I wanted to contribute a story about the Beatles for you. I am an absolutely fanatical Beatles’ fan (aren’t we all!) - and my mother told me this story.

In 1964, when the Beatles came to Adelaide, my mother (who was 16 at the time) was working in Rundle Street. She was at work the day the gorgeous four were here, but not being a fan (I still don’t know what’s wrong with her!) she didn’t bother to go and see them, although one of her work mates did.

Anyhow, this young girl told the boss she was going on a mail errand and she wouldn’t be long. Of course, she planned to be as long as it took to see the Beatles in person. Unfortunately, the boss was watching television a bit later on (probably the next day) - and he saw my mother’s work mate, screaming along with the rest of the frenzied fans! What are the chances-in a sea of 300,000 people - to be seen by your boss, especially when you weren’t supposed to be there?! This girl was subsequently sacked (very unjust, if you ask me!)-but I can’t think of a better sacrifice than to be sacked for going to see the Beatles - it would have been worth it!!

I thought it was a great story - being a huge fan - and collector of Beatles memorabilia - I love to hear any stories involving my favourite lads - so thank you to everybody who is participating. A big thank you, also, to Bob Rogers - I have his interviews with the Beatles on CD and listen to them constantly. I don’t think I will ever get over the disappointment of not being alive when the Beatles came to Australia! I did see Paul McCartney in concert in ’93, it was a dream come true. I have two other ambitions: to see Ringo in concert and to meet both him and Paul!! I’m not asking for much am I?! By the way - Bob Rogers, you are one of the luckiest people in the world - next to Paul’s wife Heather Mills, that is!

Teresa, South Australia
