Living History
Security matters
You know, back in 1956, security was not what it is today.
I lived not far out from the Melbourne CBD, so I often went in to see the players turn up to the events. I remember going to see the then famous German Hockey team. We were able to stand by the edge of the playing field and the team came up and signed autographs.
One could have said that there was reason for security however. A rather intense fight broke out between the Russian and Hungarian water polo teams as the Soviets had invaded Hungary only weeks before the teams met in a semi-final.
The Olympics bring countries from all over the world together, despite what tensions may exist. It is when the heat of circumstance prevails that the message of the games falls flat. Yet the games live on because people try to believe in the good of each other.
