Our new age postulant
Back in 1964 I was a novice in a Carmelite Monastery in NSW. I had entered in 1959, just before Beatles Mania so I'd missed out on catching the Beatles Bug. As a matter of fact, I'm only sort of catching up now. I did know that pop music was becoming louder, seemingly more erratic and defiant than it was in the crooning era of my teenage years. I knew this because the High School across the road from our Monastery would have school dances and the whole tone of the music was, I considered, quite raucous.
Soon after the Beatles had visited and left our shores, we got a new Postulant. She was a very attractive woman. I remember the time she told us about the Beetles Concert she had gone to and how much she had enjoyed it. I was amazed at the effort she had made to ensure that she had a good position and there this pedigreed looking Postulant had roared along with the best of them.
Then I was further amazed at the trouble she went to, to get one of the Fab Four's autographs. We were in stitches because with the autograph she got was also something of a 'come on' invitation and she was questioned on what she was going to do with her autograph. "Oh" she breathed with delight, "this is for my Mother, she thinks you're WONDERFUL!"
The fabulous jaw dropped.
