Mother's Help
When I left boarding school, after completing Year 12, I returned to my parents grazing property in rural New South Wales. I needed to fill in several months before going to Thailand as an exchange student sponsored by the Guyra Rotary Club. I can’t remember quite how it came about but I found soon found myself working as a live-in Mother’s Help for a family on another property in the district. I had the daily care of three little girls, aged 2, 4 and 6, whose mother worked off the farm. They were a lively little trio, who used to wake early, and hop into bed with me so I could read to them. I think I could still almost recite from memory the text for “The Best Nest” and “The Little Black Pony” – their favourites!
