Living History
Our first TV was an Admiral
Myself and my two brothers went to my friend Sandra’s place to see the first night of TV. Her dad owned an electric appliance shop and brought home a new TV. There must have the whole street crowded into their lounge room. I was fifteen at the time.
Our first TV was an Admiral. Dad got the biggest and the best in 1956. Of course it was black and white. However it came with a translucent plastic screen cover that was blue on top, green in the middle and yellow on the bottom and interspersed with red, so we could see coloured TV!
I remember Chuck Faulkner who did the news, Brian Henderson did Bandstand and we all loved I Love Lucy. Another family favourite was Father knows Best and Pick a box with Bob and Dolly Dyer.
We bought our first TV 2nd hand from Stan, Sandra’s dad when we were first married for fifty pounds- such a bargain. Our favourite was Bobby Limb’s show the sound of music. Our second TV was a Pye and it sat on a black stand. In 1976 we got our first colour TV with $500 my husband’s art prize from the Easter show.
We were part of man’s small steps for mankind as we watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.
